Prioritize Public Safety

By working with local law enforcement, the Virginia Beach Sheriff’s Office provides an increased safety presence in our community.  Our Sheriff’s Deputies are ready, willing, and able to assist the police and first responders with the protection and well-being of the citizens of Virginia Beach.  We are a force multiplier with regards to crime prevention and emergency response.

Guarantee Fiscal Responsibility

To help defray the cost of operating a jail, the Virginia Beach Sheriff’s Office generates revenue by selling ads in the Inmate Rule Book and on the Closed-Circuit Television Network with screens displayed throughout the Courthouse Lobby and the Correctional Center Intake Foyer.

Our successful Trusty Volunteer Work Program allows inmates to learn work force skills and earn privileges while helping the jail lower operational costs of meal prep, facility maintenance and laundry services.  This saves the Virginia Beach Sheriff’s Office approximately 1.8 million dollars annually.

We further defrayed the cost of operating the jail thanks to the Inmate Canteen and CareMart which generate over 3 million dollars per year for the office.

Ensure Transparency & Accountability

As your Sheriff, I have initiated an annual, mandatory audit of the Virginia Beach Sheriff’s Office effected by the Virginia Beach City Auditor.  This report is available for review by the public on www.vbso.net and ensures that our office operates at the highest level of competence.  Facility tours are available upon request for citizens, civic leagues, and advocacy organizations.

Recruit and Maintain a Premiere Workforce

The Virginia Beach Sheriff’s Office recruits the highest quality candidates for Deputy Sheriffs.

We hire the very best with an emphasis on honesty, compassion, as well as physical and mental aptitude. We offer top pay, impressive benefits and signing bonuses.  Continuing education, advanced training and professional mentoring ensures that the Virginia Beach Sheriff’s Office secures a superior public safety team.

Improve Mental Health Programs

Mental health remains a top priority for the Virginia Beach Sheriff’s Office. The Virginia Beach Department of Health and Human Services offers a successful partnership with the Virginia Beach Correctional Center by assessing and treating those with mental health and substance abuse issues during incarceration.  This collaborative effort includes our medical provider, the Department of Social Services, the Community Services Board,  Adult Correctional Services and Community Corrections and Pretrial.

Advance Inmate Re-Entry Initiatives

The Electronic Home Incarceration Program allows non-violent inmates who have secured employment to be released from jail under the supervision of a Sheriff’s Office GPS-enabled ankle bracelet. Participants must have a sentence of less than one-year and adhere to a strict curfew with travel restrictions. Also required is weekly drug and alcohol testing. The offender’s salary funds the program and can help mitigate delinquent, child support payments as well.  The experience keeps inmates connected with the community while paying their debt to society.

Provide Inmate Alternative Sentencing Opportunities

The Sheriff’s Office Weekender Program allows offenders to serve their jail time on the weekends or other non-consecutive days for the purpose of maintaining employment.  Inmates report to the Correctional Facility on Fridays and are released Sunday mornings allowing them to remain a wage earner for themselves and their dependents.
